DRDO Interview Experiences

 DRDO Interview 2020 (Phd Student)

The panel consisted of 5 members in which one was chairman. Interview duration was 40-45 min. A tab and electronic pen were given and whatever I wrote was getting displayed on the screen behind me.

I entered the room and greeted everyone. chairman sir said Vaibhav come and sit.

Chairman: You have passed BTech in 2016, what were u doing?
Me: sir I have done MTech in mechanics of fluid and currently I am doing PhD.

Chairman: So 1-year gap for preparation. when u have joined PhD?
Me: yes sir in July 2019

Chairman: Will u leave PhD if selected here?
Me:  I will join here but if got permission then will complete my PhD as part-time.
He told good and asked me what project are u working on. My project was related to aerodynamic issues related to train passing through a tunnel. He then asked me to explain my model and how I have done my project.
One of the interviewers asked me to show some practical examples related to my project and asked me how to model those.

Interviewer1: (engineering drawing) he asked me to assume a sphere that has two holes drilled perpendicular to each other. He asked me to draw the front view and top view projections. He was going to ask some more ques but I told him that I have studied this subject a long time ago so I cannot remember that. The chairman told that happens.
Write Navier-stokes eq., how to do pressure-velocity coupling. have u done a grid independence test in your project. what is it?. difference between solid and fluid related to shear strain.

Interviewer 2: What types of forces u encountered in your model? which model? He asked me to give some examples like assume a ship in the water and asked what forces will it encounter. Mostly project-oriented questions.

Interviewer 3: He then asked me to assume a rocket moving with some acceleration what are the forces. Take a section and explain it. He told me to leave it and recommend the shape of the missile nose based on your project findings( In my project I have three shapes of train head). I told some but not able to satisfy his ques.

Interviewer 4: Suppose you want to fit a hydraulic actuator in any device, what will be its shape?
Have you heard of the hydraulic actuator and accumulator.? I explained to him.
What are the other devices which are used with it. He asked me what is hydraulic accumulator. I told it is used to store pressurized fluid. Then asked what is the difference between the accumulator and storage tank. are both the same? Somehow I was able to answer and told the exact difference. accumulator stores when in extra and supplies it in case of deficiency. He told yes this is the difference. then he shifted to MD and asked do you know the flange joint.
Explain, draw and how will you design a bolt in a flange joint. I explained to him correctly. He then asked which dia will u take for analysis (core dia) and asked about core dia. Then asked me how to represent threaded bolt in ED (I draw something and told I cannot recall).
At last chairman, sir said good and asked me to leave.

All the senior scientists (interviewers and chairman) were very supportive they helped me when I got stuck in some ques. They gave hints. I was not able to answer some ques but overall it was a very nice experience. They are looking for a scientist who is interested in doing research not just doing job. Overall they asked very practically and research-oriented questions (may be as I was doing PhD and it may differ in other cases).

Result: recommended for selection as Scientist B

 DRDO Interview Experience #2

Interview duration around 30 min and 5 members were present in panel 1.

Member 1: You passed your BTech in 2016,  what were u doing after that?
I told them I had done a job for 2 years in GMMCO LTD. Then I opted for the preparation of competitive exams.
What job did you do in your previous company?
What was the most critical component in your machine?
What steps did you take?

Member2:
  1.  Gave me a damped vibration system and told me to write the governing equations.
  2. Calculate the damping coefficient.
  3. Replace viscous damping with Coulomb damping and write the governing equations.
  4. Types of damping-system
  5. Find amplitude at resonance condition in terms of static deflection.
  6. What is active damping?
  7. Which active damper is used in automobiles?
  8. What is the curvature effect in helical spring explain with a diagram?

Member 3:

Draw the graph between conductivity and radius for a double insulated layer of pipe carrying steam. ( He tried to explain multiple times but I didn't understand the question 😃)

Member 4:

  1. What material you used for the bucket in your machine ?( He was talking about CAT 7495 HD which I previously erected 3 no. )
  2. What materials did you add for toughness in the blade?
  3. What is the full form of SWL written on the crane?( as I have worked with cranes in my previous company).
Member 5:

  1. What is the condition for overhead cranes?
  2. Deflection is more in SSB when the load is at the center or at the asymmetric position?
  3. Formula for deflection.
